Watching the News
Sam Calhoun
They tell us the moon is new
though the fog hides it,
though the morning murmuration
rush of starlings still signals the cracking
orange sky back of the darkness,
and the frozen birdbath is a sundial
collecting leaves like an advent calendar,
as if we couldn't see the water frozen,
as if we couldn't figure out this is winter on our own.
